Evliya Çelebi stated in his Seyahatname that The Great Alexander had given the name of the sanctuary called Vank in the Castle of Van to the city.

According to another tale, being a very old city, Van was named as Şahmerimekerd attributing to the name of Meshure Sah Meryem (Semiramis) who was Assyrian queen in 1900s B.C. Later, in the last period of Küyanya, because the governor named Van had beautified and enlarged the city, it was called as Van because of this governor.

The most reasonable and scientific opinion about the origin of the name of Van is that it comes from Urartian language Biane and Viane. Urartians named themselves as Bianian in all of the history sources. In the brightest period of Urartians, a lot of cities and communities had been gathered in Van region under the name of Biate.
